S Alam Group’s 1320 MW Banshkhali power plant has completely been shut down due to coal shortage.

The power general was completely shut down from Thursday midnight, according to authorities.

Earlier, the power plant started producing electricity temporarily on June 5.

Mostafizur Rahman, deputy project director of the power plant, confirmed the matter on Friday (June 9) afternoon.

It was learned that there is no sufficient enough coal to run the power plant. Some 500MW power had been added to the national grid from the power plant for several days on an experimental basis.

However, just in four days, the power plant was shut down due to coal shortage.

Mostafizur Rahman said, “We don’t have enough coal reserves to keep power plant on operation. Still, on the request of the Power Development Board, we have produced with the coal that was available to handle the loadshedding. Now the production from this power plant has been completely stopped due to exhaustion of coal.”

He further said, “The process of shutting down the power plant started from 10:00 pm on Thursday. Later, the load of the power plant was gradually reduced and it was completely shut down around 10:45pm.”

Mentionable, production capacity of two units of the SS Power Plant is 1,320 MW. Out of this, a unit of 660 MW capacity was commissioned at the request of PDB.
