‘Roanu’ causes colossal loss to crops in Bangladesh coasts


Dhaka – Cyclone ‘Roanu’ on Saturday caused huge damages to crops and livestock in three upazilas — Anwara, Banshkhali and Sandwip — in the Southeastern distric of Chittagong, unb news agency reported.
According to a preliminary estimate of the district administration, the cyclone washed away domestic animals worth Tk 100 crore, while crops worth Tk 50 crore in the three upazilas.Besides, 12 people were killed and 2.5 lakh houses were damaged in storms and landslides in the district as Roanu hit Chittagong along with other coastal areas of the country.
Deputy Commissioner of Chittagong Mesbah Uddin said rains, triggered by the cyclone, flooded embankments in the three upazilas and damaged many roads.
These devastated roads are feared to get even worse as monsoon is set to begin soon.
Some 30 kilometers of embankment were completely damaged in Banshkhgali, while 20 kilometers in Sandwip and 10 kilometers in Anwara.
At Khatunganj wholesale market, goods worth Tk 35 crore were damaged as tidal water entered most of the market shops, said organising secretary of Khatunganj Trade and Industries Association Mohammad Jamal Hossain.
The cyclone Roanu killed at least 23 people and damaged crops and livestock in the country’s coastal districts.
