Shaukat Mahmud arrested from Adarsha Dhaka Andolan venue

Police Tuesday arrested Shawkat Mahmud, president of a faction of Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ), from in front of Samarai Convention Centre in the city’s Panthapath area.
Plainclothes police arrested him while he was trying to enter the convention centre at around 11:15am to attend a press conference of Adarsha Dhaka Andolon there. Shawkat Mahmud is the member-secretary of the organisaiton.
After his arrest, the press conference of organisation was foiled, as organisers alleged that police locked the main entrance of the convention centre before it started.Organisers further said they were scheduled to arrange the press conference to project various alleged irregularities, vote fraud and manipulation during the Dhaka North City Corporation election on April 28 last.
Police sources said, Shawkat Mahmud was shown arrest in three arson cases filed with Jatrabari Police Station.
Shawkat Mahmud was arrested in three cases for arson attacks on vehicles, vandalising vehicles and crude bomb blasts in Jatrabari area, Deputy Commissioner (Media) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police Muntasirul Islam told reporters.
The law enforcers obstructed Shawkat Mahmud, who is also BNP chairperson’s adviser and former president of Jatiya Press Club, to enter the community centre to join the pre-scheduled meeting, personal officer Abdul Momin told reporters.
Later, he was taken by a car (Dhaka Metro-Cha-534206) to headquarters of the Detective Branch of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police.
Prof Emajuddin Ahmed, the convenor of Adarsha Dhaka Andolon, termed the incident as totally opposite to what the prime minister and other ministers saying about democracy.
Dr Zafrullah Chowdhury, founder of Gonoshasthaya Kendra said denying an organisation to hold a programme by non-political organisation cannot be a democratic attitude.
“We don’t want to condemn the incident but we can only offer to them to be become cautious about the rights of the citizens,” he added.
Senior journalist and a leader of the organisaiton Mahfuz Ullah said they have informed in writing to the Kalabagan Police Station about the meeting though it is not necessary for indoor meeting. He also showed reporters the copy of the letter to journalists.
Tabith Awal, DUJ president Abdul Hye and secretary Jahangir Alam Prodhan, among others, were present ton the occasion.
Officer-in-charge of Kalabagan Police Station Abidur Rahman however told reporters that they did not allow them to hold the programme as the authorities cancelled the programme.
Sub-inspector Yakub Ali, who was discharging his duties in front of the gate of the convention centre, said they were deployed there to maintain law and order and ensure public security.
Meanwhile, Burichong and Brahmanpara upazila units of BNP called daylong hartal in the two upazilas protesting the arrest of Shawkat Mahmud. – Staff Reporter
