Shibir calls strike in Chittagong

Student organisation Islami Chhatra Shibir has called a half-day general strike for Thursday in greater Chittagong to press for the release of its leaders and activists.
The shutdown will be effective in Chittagong and Cox’s Bazar from 6am to 2pm, A Jamil, Publicity Secretary of the Jamaat-e-Islami’s student wing, has said.

“Chittagong’s 34 leaders and activists were sent to jail. The strike has been called in protest,” he told journalists.

He said rigorous agitation would follow if they were not released immediately.

Police arrested 34 Shibir men, including 10 of its leaders, in the early hours of Tuesday in a raid on Shibir’s office in the city’s Chandanpura.

Shibir supporters took out a surprise procession in the city and unleashed violence on Tuesday. They threatened to impose a strike if the 34 were not released.

The 34 Shibir men, accused in a case of attacking policemen, were produced before a court on Tuesday evening and the judge sent them to prison.

Shibir supporters vandalised several vehicles from processions they took out in various parts of the city on Wednesday morning. Police detained 33 Shibir activists from DC Hill and Bohoddarhat areas. –
