Students call general strike in educational institutions Apr 3

Dhaka – Students will observe general strike in educational institutions across the country on 3 April demanding trial of the killers of Victoria College student Sohagi Jahan Tonu in Comilla.
The announcement for the strike came at capital’s Shahbagh intersection where students from different educational institutions including Dhaka University were staging demonstrations protesting at the murder.
The demonstrators, however, said the HSC examinations scheduled to be held on the day will remain out of the purview of the strike.
Earlier, hundreds of people, including students, blocked Shahbagh intersection, one of the busiest intersections in the city, demanding the arrest of the killers of Comilla Victoria College student Sohagi Jahan Tonu.
Witnesses said around 300 students from Dhaka University formed a human chain at the intersection around 1:00pm, halting traffic in the area, UNB news agency has reported.
Later, more protesters from different educational institutions of the city joined the human chain, demanding that the government provide security and protection for women.
Sohagi Jahan Tonu, 19, a second year history student of Victoria College and a member of Victoria College Theatre, went missing on March 20, hours after she had gone out of her house at Comilla Mynamati Cantonment for private tuition.
Later, Tonu’s father, Yar Hossain, found his daughter lying senseless with severe injuries in her body in a bush adjacent to their house.
She was then whisked off to Combined Military Hospital where doctors declared her dead.
Protest demonstrations against Tanu murder have spread to educational institutions in the rest of the country and are continuing.
