A motorcycle that had fulfilled a young man's long-cherished dream turned into a symbol of tragedy after a fatal road accident claimed the lives of two friends in Dinajpur.

The deceased were identified as Jabir Khaled, 18, the only son of eye surgeon Dr Ashraf Khaled Sagar of BNSB Eye Hospital in Chirirbandar, and Riyad Hossain, son of Dulal Hossain of Baikunthapur Shahapara under Tetulia union in the same upazila.

Both victims were Class-XI students at Amena Baki Model Residential School and College in Chirirbandar.

According to police and family sources, the accident occurred on Saturday evening at Garodanga Bridge near Champatali in Fatehjangpur union, adjacent to the Dashmile Highway Police Station on the Dinajpur-Rangpur highway.

The motorcycle collided with a private car, leaving rider Jabir and Riyad, who was riding pillion, injured.

They were initially taken to Syedpur for treatment and later transferred to Doctors Hospital in Rangpur. However, doctors declared both dead upon arrival.

Family members said Jabir had long dreamed of owning his favourite motorcycle model. His father fulfilled that wish on May 22 last year. Jabir had even shared a photograph on Facebook while receiving the motorcycle's keys, captioning it with “Alhamdulillah.”

On Saturday, the two friends were reportedly heading towards Syedpur to enjoy the festive atmosphere on the occasion of Eid-ul-Azha when the journey ended in tragedy.

Officer-in-Charge of Dashmile Highway Police Station Nirmal Chandra Mohanta said car driver Fatik Roy Sumon, 22, was detained and the vehicle was seized before being handed over to Chirirbandar Police Station.

Meanwhile, Chirirbandar Police Station OC Mahmudun Nabi said a case was filed around midnight, reports UNB.
