The deceased was identified as Mohammad Alamgir, 46, a Warrant Officer of the Bangladesh Army, who was posted to the SRB-7 Feni Camp on deputation. He hailed from the Shantibag area of Kendua upazila in Netrokona district.
According to police and relevant sources, an SRB team had set up a temporary checkpoint near the Fatehpur Star Line Filling Station on the Chattogram-bound lane of the highway following a tip-off.
When the team signalled a covered van to stop, its driver complied.
However, the driver of a truck allegedly ignored the signal and rammed the covered van from behind while travelling in the same lane around 1:00am.
The truck then allegedly tried to flee along the left side of the highway and struck Alamgir, who was on duty at the checkpoint, leaving him critically injured.
The truck subsequently fell into a roadside ditch, leaving its driver Md Sojib critically injured as well.
Other SRB members rescued Alamgir and Sojib and took them to Feni Sadar Hospital, where the attending doctor declared Alamgir dead after examination.
Sojib, son of Salam Gazi from the Shyampur area under Bakerganj upazila in Barishal district, is currently undergoing treatment at the hospital.
Upon receiving the information, a team from Mohipal Highway Police Station arrived at the scene and took both vehicles into police custody, reports UNB.
