
The passenger arrived in Dhaka by Malaysian Airlines flight MH-196 from Kuala Lumpur and was kept under surveillance after landing at the airport.
Customs officials searched him in presence of intelligence agency personnel while he was crossing Green Channel-1. The name of the passenger is- Yang Don Sew (43). He is a Malaysian national.
During the search, customs officials recovered nine gold bars from his body. The consignment comprised four bars weighing one kilogram each and five bars weighing 100 grams each.
The gold bars, with a purity of 24 carats, were wrapped in a black cloth belt and concealed underneath his shirt. Customs officials estimated the value of the seized gold at around Tk eight crore.
The passenger did not make any baggage declaration and could not produce any valid documents or papers supporting the possession of the gold. It is the violation of the Customs Act, 2023 and the Foreign Exchange Regulation Act, 1947, the NBR said.
The customs authorities temporarily seized the gold under Section 191 of the Customs Act, 2023, pending completion of legal proceedings.
The process of filing a criminal case against the passenger with the airport police station is underway, it added.
Dhaka Customs House and Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport authorities said their operations would continue to prevent illegal gold smuggling and protect national interests, reports BSS.
