Sylhet Truck-pickup collision death toll now 15

At least 15 people were killed and ten others injured in a head-on collision between a truck and a pickup van at Nazir Bazar in South Surma upazila of the district early this morning.

Among the deceased, nine were identified as Haris Mia, 50, Sourav, 25, Sadhu Mia, 40, Tayef Noor, 45, Sagar, 18, Rashid Mia, 40, Dulal Mia, 55, Badshah Mia, 45 of Bhatipara village under Dirai upazila of Sunamganj district and Wahid Ali, 40 of Sunamganj Sadar upazila.

According to the South Surma Police Station officials, all of them were construction workers. However, identities of the other six victims could not be known immediately.

"The accident took place when the pick-up carrying around 30 construction workers collided head-on with a sand-laden truck around 5:30am, leaving 11 pickup van passengers dead on spot and 14 others injured," Md Moniruzzaman, Deputy Director of Sylhet Fire Service and Civil Defence told BSS.

"Fire service officials and police rushed to the spot, rescued the injured and sent them to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital (SOMCH) where four people succumbed to their injuries," he added.

According to the duty doctors of the emergency department of SOMCH, some of the injured are in critical condition, reports BSS.
