The collision between two trains in Bhairab occurred on Monday afternoon as the container train disregarded a signal, a Bangladesh Railway official said following the accident that left at least 20 dead and many others injured.

Nazmul Islam, Acting General Manager (east) of Bangladesh Railway, informed the media about their initial finding.

He said the container train was supposed to stay outside of the station but it entered there overshooting the signal.

Siraj-ud-Daulah, chief information officer of the BR, said they had learned that the passenger train, Egarosindhur Express, arrived at the Bhairab Railway Station from Kishoreganj, and stopped there to change direction.

It pulled out of the station to get on the Dhaka-bound line around 3:00 pm, and before the passenger train cleared the switch, the Chattogram-bound container train rammed into the last three carriages of Egarosindhur Express.
