The identities of the victims remain undisclosed as authorities continue their investigation.
According to Joynal Abedin, Officer-in-Charge of Sreepur Police Station, the students, from IUT’s Mechanical Engineering Department, were traveling in a BRTC double-decker bus when the tragedy occurred. Around 10:30 AM, the bus reached Udaykhali village in Telihati union and came into contact with a hanging live wire, causing an electrical shock. One student was killed instantly, and 33 others were injured in the incident.
Local residents and authorities reported that five of the injured were taken to Mymensingh Medical College and Hospital, where two were later declared dead by doctors. The remaining victims are receiving treatment for their injuries.
Eyewitnesses have pointed out that the road where the accident occurred is typically not used by buses, leading to speculation that the area may not have been adequately monitored for safety. Local authorities, including the police, have arrived at the scene and are taking necessary actions to investigate the cause of the incident and ensure such a tragedy does not repeat.
The tragic event has left the university community in shock as officials continue to support the families of the victims.
