5 Killed in Bus-Autorickshaw Collision in Sherpur

Five people were killed and one critically injured in a tragic collision between a bus and a CNG-run autorickshaw on the Sherpur-Mymensingh highway in Sherpur Sadar upazila on Sunday morning, local police reported.


Among the deceased was 45-year-old CNG driver Lokman Akmal, a resident of Kamari area in Sherpur Sadar.

According to Jobaidul Alam, Officer-in-Charge of Sherpur Sadar police station, the incident occurred around 11:30 am when a Dhaka-bound bus, operated by Refat Paribahan and traveling from Kurigram's Rowmari upazila, collided head-on with the autorickshaw coming from the opposite direction in the Safmari area of Bhatshala union. The collision resulted in five fatalities on the spot and left one woman severely injured.

The injured woman was initially rushed to a private hospital in Sherpur and later transferred to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital due to the worsening of her condition, the OC confirmed.

Traffic on the highway was disrupted for approximately one hour as emergency responders worked to clear the wreckage. Normalcy was restored once the damaged vehicles were removed from the scene.

In a turn of events, the bus driver fled the scene following the crash, but local residents managed to seize the vehicle. Police are continuing their investigation into the incident.
