24 Killed in Bus-Truck Collision in Zimbabwe
A horrific head-on collision between a bus and a truck near Beitbridge, Zimbabwe, claimed 24 lives on Thursday, police confirmed.
The bus, traveling from Harare to Beitbridge with 65 passengers, collided with the truck after attempting to overtake another vehicle. Police spokesperson Paul Nyathi stated that while the exact number of injuries remains unclear, 17 people died at the scene, and seven more succumbed to injuries at a local hospital. At least 30 others were reported injured.
Disturbing images from the scene show covered bodies and wrecked vehicles. President Emmerson Mnangagwa expressed shock and grief, declaring the crash a national disaster. He assured the public that the government would cover funeral expenses and urged drivers to exercise extreme caution on the roads.
The accident highlights ongoing road safety issues in Zimbabwe, where speeding and poor infrastructure contribute to frequent crashes. Despite efforts to improve roads, including recent resurfacing, the country continues to grapple with unsafe driving conditions.
