Cumilla, Jan 31 – Two people, including a child, were killed when a bus hit them while they were crossing the road on the Eliotganj–Muradnagar highway in Chandina upazila of Cumilla district on Saturday morning.

The deceased could not be identified immediately, though locals assumed them to be a mother and her son.

Locals said the woman and the five-year-old child had just got down from a local bus when a bus named ‘Nilachol’ lost control and hit them, killing the woman on the spot and leaving the child critically injured.

The bus then hit a mini covered van, twisting it.

Locals rushed the injured child to a local hospital and later transferred him to Gauripur Health Complex in Daudkandi, where the on-duty doctor declared him dead.

Ruhul Amin, officer-in-charge (OC) of Eliotganj Highway Police Station, said police seized the bus and recovered the mini covered van. “Efforts are underway to identify the two bodies,” he said.

Legal action is being taken in this regard, the OC added. - UNB
