At least 12 people have been killed and 45 injured after a bus overturned on a highway near Johannesburg, South Africa, on Tuesday. Emergency services reported that passengers were thrown from the vehicle, scattering across the road.

William Nthladi, spokesperson for Ekurhuleni Emergency Management, said crews were working to upright the bus to check for any additional victims trapped underneath. "When we arrived, we found patients lying across the road," Nthladi explained.

The incident occurred in the early hours of the morning on a highway close to O.R. Tambo International Airport, Johannesburg's busiest airport. The bus, which had been traveling from Katlehong, a township east of the city, was found on its side, partially blocking the road.

Emergency responders declared 12 people dead at the scene, while 45 others were rushed to nearby hospitals, with injuries ranging from serious to critical. Among the injured was the bus driver, who was also taken to the hospital for treatment.

Authorities confirmed that no other vehicles were involved in the crash, and police have launched an investigation into the cause. Due to the fatalities, the crash site is being treated as a crime scene as investigators work to piece together what led to the devastating incident.

The tragic event has left the local community shaken, with many mourning the loss of lives on what was supposed to be a routine journey.
