Two people, including a woman, went missing after a trawler hit a pontoon in the Rupsha River in Purba Rupsha area of Khulna city on Sunday night.

One of the missing was identified as Sheikh Mahidul Haque Litu, 40, an official at Sandhani Diagnostic Centre in Khulna city.

Witnesses said Litu was returning home to Tinbottola in Rupsha after work when the trawler, carrying passengers including him and the woman, struck the pontoon near the Purba Rupsha terminal, causing them to fall into the water, reports UNB.

Inspector Abul Khayer of Khulna River Police said the search operation began shortly after the incident. “We started searching around midnight with local divers and Coast Guard members but could not locate them until 2 am. The search resumed again this morning,” he added.
