Speaking after a meeting with representatives from non-governmental organizations (NGOs) at the state guest house, Jamuna, on Saturday, Dr. Yunus emphasized the importance of collective action. "With the energy and initiative of our youth, the people of this country should come together to address the flood crisis. We must face this challenge with unity," he said.
In a briefing to reporters outside the Jamuna, Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam shared that Dr. Yunus was heartened by the widespread public response to the disaster. "He was surprised and pleased to see people from all walks of life stepping forward to aid the flood victims," Alam said, quoting Dr. Yunus. "The same spirit that was evident during the student movements is now being shown in response to this flood."
The meeting with the NGOs was attended by representatives from 44 organizations, and according to Alam, it was both productive and cooperative. Dr. Yunus urged the NGOs to coordinate their relief distribution and flood mitigation efforts to maximize their impact.
Alam noted the extensive damage caused by the flood, with many losing their homes and belongings. "While the floodwaters are beginning to recede, we are now preparing to address the health challenges that typically follow such disasters, including waterborne diseases," he explained.
He also highlighted the ongoing relief efforts, mentioning that people are actively collecting aid at the village level. "Yesterday, students at Dhaka University's TSC collected a significant amount of relief, a remarkable show of solidarity," Alam said.
Regarding communication efforts in flood-affected areas, Alam mentioned that the government is working closely with the army and mobile phone companies to restore connectivity. "We are supplying diesel oil to mobile towers and working to resume power connections as soon as possible. Once electricity is restored, mobile phone services will follow, allowing people in the affected areas to reconnect with the outside world. Relief and rehabilitation efforts are already underway."
In response to a question, Alam relayed Dr. Yunus's belief in the strength of Bangladesh's NGOs. "We must realize the vision that our youth have inspired in us, and together, we can achieve it," Dr. Yunus affirmed.
