
The government has appointed full-time administrators to six city corporations, including Dhaka South City Corporation and Dhaka North City Corporation, to oversee civic functions until new elected bodies are formed.
The Local Government Division under the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives issued a notification on Sunday confirming the appointments. The decision was made under Section 25(ka), sub-section (1) of the Local Government (City Corporation) (Amendment) Ordinance, 2024.
According to the order, Md. Abdus Salam has been appointed administrator of Dhaka South City Corporation, while Md. Shafiqul Islam Khan will oversee Dhaka North City Corporation.
Nazrul Islam Monju has been assigned to Khulna City Corporation, and Abdul Quayum Chowdhury will administer Sylhet City Corporation. Md. Sakhawat Hossain Khan has been appointed to Narayanganj City Corporation, while Md. Shawakat Hossain Sarkar will serve in Gazipur City Corporation.
The notification states that the administrators will exercise the powers and perform the duties of mayors under sub-section (3) of Section 25(ka) of the ordinance. They will also receive allowances in accordance with existing rules.
Issued in the public interest, the order takes immediate effect.
