Dhaka, Feb 24 – Four police personnel have been withdrawn from duty over allegations of assaulting journalists and university students during an anti-drug drive at Suhrawardy Udyan in the capital.

Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Ramna Division under Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Mohammad Masud Alam on Tuesday evening told media that the four police members allegedly involved in the incident have been recalled to the police lines and departmental action will be taken against them.

“Efforts are underway to identify two or three more personnel involved. Action will also be taken against them,” the DC added.

The incident took place late Monday night when police, led by DC Masud Alam, conducted an anti-drug operation at Suhrawardy Udyan. During the drive, some police personnel reportedly harassed and assaulted students and on-duty journalists.

Several videos of the incident later went viral on social media, triggering widespread criticism and condemnation from journalists’ bodies, rights activists and social media users.

Following the incident, students of University of Dhaka staged a protest in front of Shahbagh Police Station on Tuesday noon, demanding the removal of DC Masud Alam and exemplary punishment for those responsible.

Police authorities said the matter is being investigated and assured that appropriate disciplinary measures will be taken in line with the findings. - UNB
