Vegetables on sale in Dhaka City

Dear Editor,

I am writing to bring to your attention the severe plight faced by farmers in the wake of a sharp fall in the prices of vegetables such as potatoes, cabbages, cauliflowers, and other essential items. Recently, the prices of these vegetables have drastically dropped from Taka 80 per kilogram to Taka 20 per kilogram at markets in the capital city of Dhaka. At the growers' level, the prices were even lower, less than half of this amount.

While the average consumer in urban areas has welcomed this decrease in prices, many farmers are facing significant financial distress. They have invested substantial resources in producing these vegetables, only to find themselves unable to recover their costs due to the sudden price drop. The lack of adequate cold storage facilities has further exacerbated their difficulties, as they are unable to store their harvested vegetables and avoid losses.

The current situation has left many farmers in a state of despair, as they struggle to make ends meet and sustain their livelihoods. It is imperative that the government takes immediate and effective measures to address this issue and provide much-needed relief to the affected farmers.

I urge the government to facilitate the setting up of a cold chain of farmers' cooperatives. Such a system would enable farmers to store their produce and sell it at more favorable prices, thereby preventing future disasters like the current one. Additionally, steps should be taken to help farmers recuperate the losses they have suffered this season. Financial assistance, subsidies, and support programs should be provided to ensure that farmers can continue their vital work without facing undue hardship.

The agriculture sector is the backbone of our nation, and it is crucial that we support our farmers in times of crisis. By implementing these measures, we can safeguard the livelihoods of farmers and ensure the stability and growth of our agricultural economy.

Thank you for your attention to this urgent matter.

Sincerely,

Jashimuddin Ahmed
