Customs officials detained a Bangladesh Biman Airlines employee and recovered nine gold bars weighing 1,049.40 grams from his possession at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport last night.

The airport unit of Dhaka Customs House recovered the gold at around 11:20pm with the assistance of Airport Security (AVSEC) and in the presence of officials from other intelligence agencies, said a National Board of Revenue (NBR) press release today.

The officials searched Biman employee Obaidur Rahman and recovered the gold bars, wrapped in tissue paper, from his shirt pocket and waist belt.

The seized gold is worth an estimated Tk 2.10 crore, the release said.

Based on information obtained from Obaidur during preliminary interrogation, customs officials later detained a passenger allegedly linked to the incident, reports BSS.

Legal proceedings against those involved are underway under the Customs Act, 2023 and other relevant laws, the NBR said.
