Customs officials today seized three oval-shaped gold paste pieces, weighing 1.29 kilograms, from the body of a passenger who arrived at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA) from Sharjah.

Acting on a tip-off about possible gold smuggling, the Preventive Team of Dhaka Customs House conducted surveillance at different points of the airport from around 6:30am.

At one stage, the team intercepted Arman Uddin Siddique, passport No. A12028533, after he completed immigration procedures and reached Baggage Belt-02.

During a search, customs officials recovered the three oval-shaped gold pieces, each weighing around 430 grams, concealed in his rectum and wrapped in white adhesive tape, said an NBR press release.

The seized gold has a purity of 24 carats. A goldsmith’s assessment found that refining the gold paste could produce around 1kg of gold.

The customs authorities estimated the market value of the seized gold at around Tk 1.74 crore.

The Preventive Team of Dhaka Customs House is taking legal steps to file a criminal case against the passenger, reports BSS.
