Home Affairs Adviser Lieutenant General (Retd.) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury said on Monday that the e-gate at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA) will be opened within the next two to four days.

“We will open this gate at the airport very soon, so that passengers can enter by showing their passports,” he said. “We will also start issuing electronic passports for foreign countries by December.”

The adviser spoke to the media after attending a meeting of the core committee on law and order at the Secretariat on Monday.

When asked whether the e-gate will open this week, Jahangir Alam Chowdhury replied, “Roughly speaking, yes — but I can't say exactly. If the Director General of Passports were here, he could have given a clearer answer.”

The e-gate was installed a few years ago to allow passengers to pass through immigration quickly and without hassle.

Passengers, however, have complained that none of the e-gates are currently working. As a result, they are not getting the expected service and are instead facing long delays and long queues at immigration, reports UNB.
