A teenager was fatally shot by the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) on Sunday night while attempting to cross the border in Kulaura, Moulvibazar. The incident, which occurred at the Lalarchak border area under Sharifpur union, came to light on Monday night (September 2).

The victim, 16-year-old Swarna Das, was the daughter of Porendra Das from Kalnigar village in Paschim Juri union, Juri upazila. According to her father, Swarna and her mother were attempting to cross into India illegally to visit her elder brother, who resides in Tripura, India. They were assisted by two local brokers.

Upon reaching the fence on the Indian side around 9 p.m., BSF personnel opened fire, killing Swarna instantly. Her mother managed to escape unharmed.

On Monday night, a team from Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) visited the family to inform them of Swarna’s death. The BSF is reported to have taken custody of Swarna's body, according to her grieving father.

Nayek Obayed, commander of the Lalarchak Border Outpost of BGB, confirmed hearing about the incident, stating, "I have heard that one person died due to BSF firing while a few Bangladeshis were attempting to cross into India illegally."

Binay Bhushan Roy, Officer-in-Charge of Kulaura Police Station, said that while no formal report has been filed, he is currently investigating the matter.
