Home Adviser Lt. Gen. Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury (Retd.) officially inaugurated a new battalion of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) today in Ukhiya Upazila, Cox’s Bazar, aimed at enhancing security along the Bangladesh-Myanmar border.

“The sensitivity of the Bangladesh-Myanmar border has heightened significantly in recent years, especially due to the ongoing conflict in Myanmar. Establishing this new battalion along the frontier is a timely and necessary step to address the evolving security challenges,” Jahangir Alam remarked during the inauguration.

At the event, Jahangir Alam raised the flag of the newly formed Ukhiya Battalion (64 BGB) at the training ground of the Cox’s Bazar Battalion (34 BGB), marking the official establishment of the new unit.

Speaking to journalists, the Home Adviser expressed confidence in the strategic importance of the Ukhiya Battalion: “We believe this new battalion will be pivotal in ensuring seamless security along the Bangladesh-Myanmar border.”

The primary mandate of the Ukhiya Battalion will include curbing illegal border crossings, preventing drug trafficking, curbing the smuggling of contraband goods, addressing cross-border crimes, combating militancy and terrorism, and safeguarding the lives and property of the people living in border areas, he added.

In addition, the Home Adviser also hoisted the flags of the Station Headquarters and Guard Police Battalion, Dhaka, as well as the Dog Squad K-9 Unit and Training Center in Gazipur, marking a broader security initiative.

During the ceremony, Jahangir Alam emphasized the role of the BGB in enhancing border surveillance and increasing operational efficiency in Ukhiya, Cox’s Bazar.
