On the eve of Eid-ul-Azha, the Bangladesh Jewellers’ Association (BAJUS) announced a gold price increase of up to Tk 2,415 per bhori (11.664 grams), effective from Friday, June 6.
After the revision, 22-carat gold—the highest quality available locally—now costs Tk 1,72,336 per bhori, a significant rise from the previous rate set on May 22.
The price hike was approved by the BAJUS Standing Committee on Pricing and Price Monitoring in a meeting held on Thursday. The increase is linked to rising prices of refined gold, known locally as “tejaabi.” “The new rates reflect adjustments based on raw gold prices,” said a BAJUS spokesperson.
Prices for other gold categories also increased: 21-carat gold rose by Tk 2,297 to Tk 1,64,497 per bhori; 18-carat by Tk 1,971 to Tk 1,40,994; and traditional method gold by Tk 1,691 to Tk 1,16,640 per bhori. Silver prices remain unchanged.
This is the second gold price hike in two weeks, adding extra cost for consumers preparing for Eid celebrations. Jewelry sellers anticipate a possible slowdown in purchases but expect loyal customers to follow through with their plans.
“We expected some adjustments, but a raise just before Eid is tough for buyers,” said Rafiq Hossain, a jeweler in Dhaka’s New Market.
