The University Grants Commission (UGC) today expressed concern over recent media reports on research budget allocations for public universities, saying the reports were based on incomplete information and could create confusion among teachers, researchers and students.

In a statement today, the UGC said the reports failed to reflect the overall picture of research funding. It clarified that Tk 226 crore has been allocated for research at public universities in the 2026-27 fiscal year, an increase of nearly 13 percent from the previous fiscal year's allocation.

The commission said reports claiming that no funds had been earmarked for research were incorrect, reports BSS.

The research financing system has been streamlined to make it easier, more transparent and research-friendly, in line with government policy, while also helping to avoid duplication in research projects, it said.

The UGC said it would release research funds as soon as it receives funding requests from the public universities.
