BRUR forms panel to probe JCD-Shibir clash
Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur (BRUR) authorities have formed a five-member investigation committee to look into Monday’s clash between activists of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) and Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir on the campus that left at least 10 people injured. SouthAsians & Diaspora
The committee was formed on Tuesday night with Associate Professor Md Masud Rana, director of the university's Public Relations Department, as its convener.
Ferdous Rahman, registrar (additional charge) at the university, said the committee was not given a specific deadline but was asked to submit its report as soon as possible.
The other members of the committee are Assistant Proctor Abdullah-Al-Mahbub, Bijoy 24 Hall Provost Amir Sharif, Associate Professor Tanziul Islam of the Department of Political Science and Associate Professor Harun Al Rashid of the Department of Chemistry.
The clash erupted on Monday evening over a banner displayed at a Shibir-organised exhibition featuring photographs of several people convicted of war crimes committed during the 1971 Liberation War.
The confrontation began around 7:30pm and continued for nearly three hours, with activists of the two student organisations chasing each other, hurling brick chips and chairs, and attacking each other with sticks.
Additional police were deployed on the campus to bring the situation under control, reports UNB.
The injured included former BRUR unit Shibir President Sohel Rana, current Secretary Imran Khan Saurav, activist Mehedi Hasan, Baizid Shikdar, Mursalin and JCD leader Ashik.
