RU hall room locked up
Rajshahi: Some activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League Rajshahi University unit on Tuesday night allegedly broke the door lock of a room in Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Hall of Rajshahi University (RU) and took control of a seat. The bedsheet of one of the residential students in that room has been removed and another students has been given its possession. The hall administration locked up the room immediately after learning of the incident.
According to some residential students and staff of the hall, Sultan Mahmud Bidyut, a master's degree student of Population Sciences and Human Resource Management Department and Md. Sarwar Hossain, a master’s student of Agronomy and Agriculture Extension department lives in room no. 235 which is two-seated. After the opening of the university hall on October 17, they haven’t entered the hall yet. Around 5 or 6 activists under Md. Ahsan Ullah, deputy legal affairs secretary of RU BCL, who is also in charge of that residential hall broke the door lock of that room and gave Akib Abdullah, a student of Clinical psychology department possession of the seat of Sultan Mahmud.
At present 4 locks are seen hanging on the door. The hall administration put a door lock.
Around 8 students residing near the room said, Akib told them that he had paid 5,000 tk to the BCL leaders and workers of the hall to occupy the seat.
However, denying the financial transaction, BCL leader Ahsan Ullah said, Akib came to me with the recommendation of RU BCL general secretary Faisal Ahmed Runu. I told him to go to that room as it was empty. The residential students in that room have finished their Master’s. I talked to them. The boy entered the hall without informing me. He shouldn’t have done this.
Akib Abdullah's mobile phone was found switched off and could not be contacted.
Sultan Mahmud Bidyut, a residential student in room 235 said, I came home a few days ago for some family work. This evening, my roommate informed me that someone entered my room. After that, I have informed the provost of the hall.
Faisal Ahmed Runu, general secretary of the university unit of Chhatra League, said, I don't know about the matter yet.
University Proctor Professor Liaquat Ali said it is the responsibility of the provost and hall officials to see who was occupying the hall room or who was creating chaos. If the hall authority fails to resolve the issue, the university administration will look into the matter.
Sujan Sen, provost of the residential hall said, An unfortunate incident had taken place. After knowing of the matter, I immediately sent the supervisor of the hall and locked up the room. Later I came and collected the information of those who are involved. The university administration has been informed. After investigating the matter, strict action will be taken against those who are involved, he said.
The Rajshahi University authorities reopened the dormitories on October 17 after a long 18 months of closure due to the coronavirus pandemic. Many students left the residential halls after graduating during this long time. At least 70 seats have been vacated in each residential hall. The BCL leaders of the hall units are collecting the names of the students staying in different rooms to occupy the vacant seats. That’s why the administration is having trouble with the distribution of seats. – RU Correspondent
