Two of the three individuals arrested in connection with the tragic death of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) student Muhtasim Masud have failed alcohol tests.

The update was confirmed by Narayanganj Civil Surgeon Dr. AFM Moshiur Rahman on December 20. He stated that the dope tests were conducted earlier in the day at Narayanganj's General Hospital (Victoria) after the three suspects were detained.

The individuals—Mubin Al Mamun, Mirajul Karim, and Asif Chowdhury—were tested for alcohol and other substances. Dr. Moshiur confirmed that the results for Mubin and Mirajul returned positive.

According to Mehedi Islam, Senior Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) for the Ga Circle in Narayanganj, the tests followed the discovery of an empty bottle of liquor and a can of beer inside Mubin’s car. Police had found the items after a car crash in the early hours of the morning, which resulted in the death of Muhtasim and left his two friends critically injured.

“The discovery raised suspicion that Mubin was driving under the influence,” said Mehedi Islam.

The drug or dope test checks for the presence of illegal substances, including alcohol, in bodily samples such as urine, saliva, blood, or hair.

In an emotional statement, Muhtasim's father, Masud Miah, struggled to speak when he saw his son's body returned to their Green Road home in the afternoon. "My son was stopped by police at a check post near Purbachal, and he was about to show his papers. Suddenly, a car driven recklessly by some drunk youths hit his motorcycle. A former army official's son killed my son. I demand exemplary punishment for all of them," he told reporters.

Muhtasim, 22, a student in BUET's Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE), was killed in the crash. His two friends, Amit Saha, 22, and Mehedi Hasan, 22, were critically injured. Amit is receiving treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), while Hasan is being treated at Square Hospital.

Muhtasim's father filed a case with the Rupganj police later in the day.

The three suspects—Mubin (20), Mirajul (22), and Asif (22)—were arrested and sent to court after the alcohol tests. Senior ASP Mehedi confirmed that the suspects were subsequently sent to jail, with a court hearing scheduled for Sunday. The case details revealed that Muhtasim and his friends had gone to Nila Market for dinner on the evening of December 19. On their return to Dhaka, they were stopped at a police checkpost at around 3 a.m. on December 20.

While the three students were stopped on their stationary motorcycle and speaking with police, Mubin’s car crashed into them, killing Muhtasim instantly and injuring Amit and Hasan.

Police, along with locals, detained the car’s occupants, including the driver, Mubin, who is the son of Brigadier General (Retd) Abdullah Al Mamun from Mirpur DOHS. The car, which is registered under Abdullah’s name, was impounded by authorities.

Mirajul is the son of Rizwanul Karim from Mirpur's Pirerbagh area, and Asif is the son of Bahauddin Chowdhury from Uttara Sector 13.

Following the incident, BUET students organized protests. In the morning, they demonstrated outside the Rupganj police station, demanding justice for their peer’s death. Later in the day, a rally was held at Palashi intersection near the BUET campus. The students presented six demands, including ensuring the proper legal process, compensating the victim’s family, and providing medical treatment for the injured students.
