A schoolgirl drowned in a pond of Eden College in the capital’s Azimpur area on Monday morning.

The deceased was identified as Sanjida Khatun Rupa, 18, an HSC second year commerce student at Agrani Girls School and College and daughter of Saj Uddin Saju, a resident of Champakoli Lane in the city’s Chawkbazar area.

Sanjida, who might have slipped into the pond, was rescued in an unconscious state and taken to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) around 11am where doctors declared her dead after examination, said Inspector Md Faruq, in-charge of the DMCH police outpost.

The body was kept at the hospital morgue and the concerned police station was informed, he said.

Rifat Ara Rima, office assistant at Khodeza Khatun Dormitory of Eden College, said Sanjida had come to meet a student named Mohana.

Sanjida accidentally fell into the pond and Mohana also fell into it while trying to rescue her.

Nearby people managed to save Mohana first and later Sanjida was pulled out using a water pipe.

Sanjida’s elder brother Tanvir Islam, said she had left home in the morning saying she had a practical exam, reports UNB.

She was the youngest among four siblings.
