Rich tributes were paid to National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam at a discussion meeting organized at the National Press Club on Wednesday marking his 28th death anniversary.
Speakers at the meeting said that Nazruls songs and poems had inspired the movement for freedom from the British oppressors before 1947, the Bangladesh Liberation War of 1971 and against the movement for the second liberation achieved on August 5 last.
They said during the July-August movement students sang the songs, “Karar oi lauha kapat..” and “Sikal para chal moder” to take fresh inspirations as the autocratic ruler responded with ordering the law enforcers to fire live bullets at innocent and unarmed students and people.
As the law enforces became ruthless, the students became fearless and declared they had no way to go back as freedom waited in their front. A Police officer was seen in a video footage telling the former home minister that as they fired one bullet one student fell but other students remained in their positions, and this was the most frightening thing in the whole operation.
The discussion meeting was held at the Abdus Salam Hall at the second floor of National Press Club with Humayun Kabir, Bepari, President, Jatiyuatabadi Sangskritik Dal in the chair.
Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury, former minister and member of BNP's standing committee, was present as the chief guest. Nazrul Researcher and BNP Chairperson's Advisor Abdul Hye Shikder, BNP Joint Secretary General Khairul Kabir Khokon, Dhaka University Professor Dr. Sukomal Barua, Editor of GreenWatch Dhaka Mostafa Kamal Majumder, former President of Jatiya Samajik Sangskritik Sangstha Razabud Daulah Chowdhury, Sirajganj District BNP Vice President Matiur Rahman, Kurigram District BNP Former General Secretary Former MP Omar Farooq among others spoke at the Function
Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury said that the student-mass movement was crowned with success on August 5 taking inspirations from songs of National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam but conspirators have not stopped yet.

He said Awami League leaders had said that BNP leaders and workers would kill them if they came to power. The people of the country have not seen any BNP leader or activist to kill and attack any leader of Awami League.
Abdul Hye Shikdar called for introducing Kazi Nazrul and his works to the new generation of Bangladesh to build a prosperous country.
Prof. Sukomol Barua said Nazrul was a poet of all sections of the people irrespective of religious differences. Late President Ziaur Rahman had demonstrated the same spirit by introducing Bangladeshi Nationalism under which all communities of people of Bangladesh were honoured.

Mostafa Kamal Majumder said Nazrul was given the honour of National Poet as early as 1929 when he was accorded a civic reception at Kolkata’s Albert Hall to recognize his writings for all communities and suiting all important junctures of life.
