Actor Ilias Kanchan
Film actor and founder of the Safe Roads Movement, Ilias Kanchan, has been unwell for the past seven months and has been undergoing treatment in London for the last six months. This was revealed today by his son, Mirazul Moin Joy, who spoke virtually from Canada at a press conference organized by the Safe Roads Movement (NISCHA). He confirmed that his father is currently battling a brain tumor and continuing treatment.
The press conference was held at the Zahur Hossain Chowdhury Auditorium of the National Press Club on 1 October, marking the inauguration of month-long activities ahead of the ‘National Safe Roads Day 2025’ on 22 October. During the event, Joy spoke about NISCHA’s current initiatives, the upcoming program for National Safe Roads Day, and his father’s health condition.
He informed the public that Ilias Kanchan has been in London since 26 April 2025 solely for medical reasons. Earlier this year, Kanchan began experiencing various health issues. As his condition worsened, his family took him to Anwar Khan Modern Hospital in Dhanmondi, Dhaka, on 9 April 2025. After nearly six hours of tests, including an MRI, it was revealed that he had a tumor in his brain.
Prior to the diagnosis, he had difficulty speaking and recalling things. The MRI confirmed that these problems were caused by the tumor. On 13 April, he was taken to the National Institute of Neurosciences in Agargaon, where a medical board advised that surgery would be critical because the tumor was located deep in the brain, near vital nerve connections.
Following this advice, the family decided to continue treatment in London. On 26 April 2025, Kanchan departed for London and was immediately placed under neurosurgical care at Harley Street Clinic. After three months of examinations, he underwent surgery on 5 August 2025 at Wellington Hospital under Professor Dimitrius.
Doctors informed the family beforehand that complete removal of the tumor was not possible, as it could risk his life and result in paralysis or loss of speech and mobility. With the doctors’ guidance, a portion of the tumor was removed, while the remaining part will be treated with a combination of radiation and chemotherapy. This treatment will be administered five days a week over six weeks, followed by four weeks of observation. After receiving medical clearance, it is hoped that Kanchan will be able to return to Bangladesh.
Mirazul Moin Joy, acting chairman of NISCHA, has requested prayers from the public for the speedy recovery of his father, founder of the Safe Roads Movement, Ilias Kanchan.
