Chief of Army Staff Gen. Aziz to visit Myanmar

Dhaka, Dec 4 – Bangladesh Chief of Army Staff Chief General Aziz Ahmed is going to pay a visit to Myanmar on December 8 to strengthen the bilateral relations and to talk on various issues including Rohingya crisis.After a meeting with the foreign minister AK Abdul Momen at Foreign Ministry yesterday, Army Chief told the journalists that his visit would focus on strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries and enhancement of engagement on various military to military issues like training.
“The purpose of the visit is to increase bilateral relations and training programme. With the increase of more engagement, the relations would be bolstered,” he said in reply to a query.
“The bilateral visits are meant for increasing relations. We want to enhance our relations from the current position. This visit would also focus on different army-to-army engagement including training, military to military engagement, etc,” he added.
Earlier, on November 27 Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen told the journalists that Army Chief’s visit to Myanmar will go in favour of Bangladesh for paving the path of Rohingya repatriation process.
He also said that Army Chief’s visit ‘open another line of negotiation for the repatriation’ of Rohingya people to their homeland.
“His visit will go in favour of us. Myanmar is not our enemy country. They are our friendly country. You know that Myanmar Army plays a vital role in that country. Under this situation, if our Army Chief visits there, it will be good for us. It will introduce another line of negotiation for the repatriation. We welcome it,” Momen said.
General Aziz is going to pay a visit to Myanmar when Bangladesh is trying to resolve the Rohingya crisis and it is expected that his visit would expedite the process of repatriation of the Rohingya people to Myanmar. – Staff Reporter
