Belém, Brazil – On November 12, more than 200 boats carrying around 5,000 people from 60 countries will converge on Guajará Bay in Belém for a powerful act of resistance and unity. The Boats for Climate Justice Flotilla, one of the central moments of the People’s Summit, will demonstrate the strength of global movements calling for real climate solutions and the protection of the Amazon.
Journalists are invited to join the flotilla boat action at 9:00 am in addition to attending a press conference at noon
The flotilla will set sail from the Federal University of Pará (UFPA), the main venue of the People’s Summit, and travel along the Guamá and Guajará rivers toward Vila da Barca, a historic riverine community that symbolizes both resilience and the contradictions of global climate policy. Participants will denounce the false solutions promoted by corporations and governments and affirm that the true answers to the climate crisis come from the peoples of the waters, forests, and peripheries.
Among the boats will be the Answer Caravan, a mobilization traveling over 3,000 kilometers from Sinop (Mato Grosso) to Belém, bringing more than 300 Indigenous, riverine, quilombola, and peasant leaders. The Caravan retraces Brazil’s “soy corridor,” exposing the destructive impacts of agribusiness and infrastructure projects such as Ferrogrão on traditional territories and ecosystems.
