Every year the Commonwealth Day is observed on the second Monday. Accordingly, this year the Commonwealth Day is observed on Monday 10 March, 2025.

The theme for Commonwealth Day 2025 is “Together We Thrive”. The theme celebrates the enduring spirit of the member countries of the Commonwealth united by the shared values in the Commonwealth Charter.

The Commonwealth is a global family of nations of 56 countries. It promotes cooperation, democracy, human rights, and sustainable development among its diverse member states. The Commonwealth originated from the British Empire’s transition toward self-governing nations. In 1931, the Statute of Westminster granted legislative independence to dominions like Canada and Australia. Then the Commonwealth evolved further after the independence of the British India creating two independent countries--India and Pakistan.

The Head of the Commonwealth is a symbolic role, currently held by King Charles III, but each member state is independent. The Commonwealth Secretariat, headquartered in London, coordinates activities and policies. The Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) is held every two years to discuss global issues. The next, that is, 2026 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, (28 th meeting) is scheduled to be held in Antigua and Barbuda in 2026, in the capital city of St. John's.

Message from His Majesty King Charles, the Head of Commonwealth on the eve of the Commonwealth Day 2025:

King's message

It may be mentioned here that the most distinguished and admired British Monarch has traditionally played a significant role in maintaining unity and stability within the Commonwealth of Nations. Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, who served as the Head of the Commonwealth for over 70 years (1952–2022), was instrumental in shaping the organization’s modern identity. Although the position is symbolic, her influence helped keep the Commonwealth relevant and cohesive.

Bangladesh became a member of the Commonwealth of Nations on April 18, 1972, shortly after gaining independence in 1971. Its membership signified global recognition of its sovereignty and commitment to democratic values, international cooperation, and economic development.

The Commonwealth forum of nations carries a great significance in today’s World. With diverse members from Africa, Asia, the Americas, Europe, and the Pacific, the Commonwealth fosters international dialogue and collaboration. It is not a political union but a partnership built on shared values and mutual respect.

Being a citizen of the Commonwealth Nations, this author sincerely hopes that the Commonwealth will make marks in releasing global tensions through promoting peace, friendship, and development in the coming years.
