Explosions were heard in several parts of southern Iran on Saturday evening, including the strategically important Qeshm Island in the Strait of Hormuz.

Iranian state television reported the explosions but did not confirm whether missile strikes had taken place in the affected areas. It suggested that the incidents might be linked to Iran’s military activities in the Strait of Hormuz.

However, the semi-official Tasnim News Agency, citing a source, reported that the sounds heard on Qeshm Island were not related to a missile attack.

Meanwhile, the naval force of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed early Sunday that two oil tankers caught fire after striking mines while travelling through the Strait of Hormuz.

The force alleged that the vessels had been attempting to navigate an unauthorised route. However, it remains unclear whether the tanker incidents were connected to the explosions reported in southern Iran.

The latest reports came days after the United States carried out an attack on the island. A US official described that operation as limited in scope and said it did not mark the resumption of a broader military campaign.
