A violent clash between Jamaat-e-Islami and BNP activists over the vacant acting chairman position of Mohdipur Union Parishad left more than 15 people injured in Palashbari, Gaibandha, on Wednesday.

According to Zulfikar Ali Bhattu, Officer-in-Charge of Palashbari Police Station, the chairman's post in Mohdipur Union had been vacant for some time, heightening political tensions between the two parties. The conflict escalated after a meeting held by Palashbari Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Kamrul Islam, which was attended by members from both parties to address the issue.
What began as a heated argument over who would assume the acting chairman's role quickly turned violent, resulting in a clash that left at least 15 injured. Witnesses also reported hearing multiple cocktail explosions during the altercation.
The injured individuals are being treated at hospitals across the district, while local sources say the clash triggered multiple chases between the two groups, disrupting traffic on the Dhaka-Rangpur Highway.
To prevent further violence, additional police forces have been deployed, and Gaibandha Police Superintendent Md Mosharraf Hossain confirmed that army patrols have been increased in Palashbari to restore order. Authorities are continuing efforts to manage the situation and ensure public safety.
