UN Secretary-General António Guterres has issued a stark warning following Israel’s decision to take military control of Gaza City, calling it “a dangerous escalation” that threatens to worsen an already catastrophic humanitarian crisis for millions of Palestinians.

In a statement released by his spokesperson on Friday, the UN chief expressed deep concern over the Israeli cabinet’s announcement to assert control over Gaza City. “This move marks a dangerous escalation and risks deepening the already catastrophic consequences for millions of Palestinians,” the statement read, adding that the operation could also endanger the lives of the remaining hostages still held in the conflict zone.

The Secretary-General highlighted the immense suffering already faced by Gaza’s population, describing the situation as “a humanitarian catastrophe of horrific proportions.” He warned that any further military escalation would likely lead to additional forced displacement, more civilian deaths, and widespread destruction—exacerbating the already unbearable conditions on the ground.

Guterres renewed his call for an immediate and permanent ceasefire, along with unimpeded humanitarian access across the entire Gaza Strip. He also reiterated his demand for the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages.

The statement further urged the Israeli government to respect and uphold its obligations under international law. Recalling a July advisory opinion by the International Court of Justice (ICJ), Guterres emphasised that Israel is legally required to halt all new settlement activities, evacuate settlers from occupied Palestinian territories, and end its unlawful presence there as swiftly as possible.

“There will be no sustainable solution to this conflict without an end to this unlawful occupation and the achievement of a viable two-State solution,” the statement concluded. “Gaza is and must remain an integral part of a Palestinian State.”

The Secretary-General’s comments come amid growing international concern about the deepening crisis in Gaza, where shortages of food, medicine, and basic necessities continue to plague the population.
