Bangladesh has been ranked 14th among the most corrupt countries out of 180, according to the Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) 2024 released by the Berlin-based Transparency International (TI).

The country scored 23 on the index, sharing the position with the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Iran. Additionally, Bangladesh's global ranking has dropped to 151st, down from 149th last year.

The findings were revealed at a press conference by Dr. Iftekharuzzaman, Executive Director of Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB), at the organization’s office in Dhanmondi, Dhaka. The rankings were compiled based on surveys conducted across 180 countries.

According to TIB, Bangladesh’s score in the CPI 2024 has dropped by one point, reaching its lowest in 13 years at 23. Due to this decline, the country has fallen two places to 151st in the global ranking.

TI assesses corruption perception levels on a scale of 0 to 100, where 0 indicates the highest level of corruption and 100 represents the lowest corruption or best governance. Bangladesh scored 23 out of 100 this year, marking a one-point decrease from the previous year's score of 24.

Dr Iftekharuzzaman noted that Bangladesh has received its lowest score in the index since 2012. He also stated that, except for Bhutan, all South Asian countries have experienced a decline in their scores.

South Sudan tops the list of the world's most corrupt countries, scoring just 8 out of 100. Somalia ranks second with a score of 9, while Venezuela holds the third position with a score of 10. Bangladesh ranks 14th on the list.

Last year, Bangladesh ranked 10th among the world's most corrupt countries. In previous years, it ranked 12th in 2022, 13th in 2021, 12th in 2020, 14th in 2019, 13th in 2018, 17th in 2017, 15th in 2016, and 13th in 2015.
