A tribunal of Dhaka has rejected a case, musician Elias Hossain filed against former VP of Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) Nurul Haque Nur for allegedly making derogatory comments about Awami League workers and supporters.

Dhaka Cyber Tribunal Judge AM Zulfiqar Hayat rejected the charge sheet of the case acquitting Nur of the charges brought against him on Thursday.

Earlier on March 6, the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan of Police (DMP) submitted a charge sheet to a court against former DUCSU VP Nurul Haque Nur in the case filed for allegedly making derogatory comments about Awami League workers and supporters.

DB Cyber and Special Crime Division’s Inspector Md Saiful Islam, and also the Investigation Officer of the case, submitted the charge sheet. In the charge sheet, DB showed Nur a fugitive.

This is the first charge sheet that was filed in any of the 20 cases against Nurul Haque Nur, and also a leader of the Bangladesh Gono Odhikar Parishad.

The case was filed over a year and a half ago, under the Digital Security Act (DSA) for allegedly making derogatory comments about Awami League workers and supporters.

Musician Elias Hossain filed the case, accusing Nur of hurting religious sentiments on April 19, 2021.

The charge sheet says that on April 14, 2021, Nur went live on Facebook and made false, derogatory, and provocative statements against Awami League activists, which hurt religious values and sentiments.

He allegedly violated the country’s overall legal framework, created enmity, and hatred, among various communities and classes, and attempted to create unrest in the society. - Special Correspondent
