Ex-SC Judge Joynul Abedin gets bail son to face warrant

The Special Judge Court-8 of Dhaka today granted bail to retired judge of the Appelllate Division Joynul Abedin, in a case filed about amassing illegal wealth beyond his known sources of income.

Besides, the special court issued arrest warrant against his son Faisal Abedin as he remained absent during the hearing.

Judge Md Badrul Alam Bhuiyan of the court passed the order after Joynul Abedin surrendered in the court, seeking bail in the case. The judge fixed June 5 for hearing on the compliance of its order.

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) recently submitted a charge sheet against Joynul Abedin and his son Faisal Abedin.

On July 21of 2019, the ACC filed the case against Justice Joynul Abedin, who retired on December 31, 2009. ACC Assistant Director Golam Mowla investigated the case and submitted the charge sheet.

The ACC started the investigation against the former Supreme Court judge in 2010.

The ACC named Joynul Abedin and his wife also connection with the allegations of illegal wealth acquisition.

On July 7 of that year, Justice Joynul Abedin and his wife were given notice to submit wealth statement.

The case record said that Justice Joynul Abedin earned Tk 35,49,909 illegally and concealed assets worth of this amount.

On the other hand, Joynul Abedin's wife Hasina Abedin allegedly earned illegal wealth beyond her known sources of income.

Commission officials said that a separate probe against Hasina Abedin and her daughter was underway.

It may be remembered that the former Appellate Division Judge Joynul Abedin was made the Judicial Investigation Officer of the August 21 grenade attack incident. - Special Correspondent
