Trial of BNP leader Aslam Chowhury begins

A Dhaka court today has began the trial of BNP Joint Secretary General Mohammad Aslam Chowdhury in a case filed against him for not submitting his wealth statement to the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) within the stipulated date.

Judge Syed Arafat Hossain of the Special Judge Court-4 of Dhaka recorded the depositions of ACC Deputy Director Md Nasir Uddin and also the complainant of the case.

Later defense lawyer cross-examined the witnesses on different points, said Aslam’s lawyer Taherul Islam Tauhid. The court then set September 4 for the next hearing. On June 8, the same court framed charges against Aslam.

ACC Deputy Director Md Jahangir Alam, also the Investigation Officer of the case, submitted the charge sheet to the court on December 29 last year.

On December 24, 2019, ACC Deputy Director Md Nasir Uddin filed the case against the BNP leader with its integrated district office-1 in Dhaka.

According to the case statement, the ACC launched an investigation against Aslam and his wife Jamila Naznin Maola, residents of South Bhatiary under Sitakunda upazila of Chattogram, over amassing hundreds of crores of Taka in cash beyond their known sources of income. - Special Correspondent
