DMCH ex-employee get 10 years in prison for embezzlement

A Dhaka court sentenced a former employee of Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) to ten years’ rigorous imprisonment in a money embezzlement case filed by Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) in 2018.

Judge Sheikh Hafizur Rahman of the Special Judge Court-9 of Dhaka delivered the verdict on Wednesday.

Convict Azizul Hauqe, record keeper and ticket counter in-charge of DMCH, was also fined Tk 50 thousand, in default, he will have to suffer another three months in the prison.

However, the court in another section, without punishing the convict imposed a fine of Tk 30,506,01 for illegally embezzling DMCH money. At the same time the court also said that DMCH will get the money. 

Saiful Islam Mithu, bench assistant of the concerned court, confirmed the matter to the media.

He said convict Azizul Haque is on the run. The court has issued arrest warrant against him.

On October 4, 2018, Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed the case against Azizul Haque for allegedly embezzling Tk 30,506,01of DMCH. Later, ACC’s Assistant Director Nurul Islam investigated the matter and submitted the final charge sheet in the court, according to case statement.

The charge sheet read that Azizul Haque embezzled Tk 15,596,55 from ticket sales and Tk 14,909,64 from patient admission fund when he was in charge of the ticket counter in the Emergency Department of DMCH from 2009 to January 22 of 2013. - Special Correspondent
