Adviser Asif Nazrul visits Internal Crimes Tribunal premises on Tuesday

Dhaka, Oct 8 - Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Adviser Dr Asif Nazrul and Housing and Public Works Adviser Adilur Rahman Khan on Tuesday ordered the authorities concerned to complete the renovation work of the Old Building, which was used as the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) of the High Court division under the Supreme Court.

They issued the order while inspecting the ICT on Tuesday morning.

Chief Prosecutor Advocate Tajul Islam and officials of the Housing and Public Works Ministry accompanied the advisers during the visit.

Advocate Tajul said they (advisers) basically went to inspect the renovation work of the Old Building.

After inspecting, the advisers wanted to know the headway of the renovation from the engineers and ordered it to end soon so that the main trial act of the cases filed with the ICT centring the recent student movement can be initiated using the Old Building.

The recently ousted Awami League established the ICT to prosecute the war crimes trials in 2010 following their electoral manifesto.

Some top BNP and Jamaat leaders were handed capital punishment and the orders were also executed. Later the activities of the ICT were halted.

The interim government decided to prosecute the accused who were involved with the alleged genocide during the July movement.

As per the decision, the government appointed the chief prosecutor on September 5 and later five more prosecutors.

A total of 54 complaints have so far been lodged accusing former Premier Sheikh Hasina and others with the ICT centring the July-August movement. - UNB
