Dinusha, Nuwantha extend Sri Lanka's lead to 116 in India Test
Colombo, 27 Aug - Sonal Dinusha and Keshara Nuwantha staged a remarkable fightback for Sri Lanka in the second Test against India on Thursday as the hosts reached 329-6 at lunch on day five. Sri Lanka, who resumed on 229-6, are leading by 116 runs after being made to follow-on in Colombo.
India looked favourites to wrap up the Test and series, but the two overnight batters put on an unbeaten stand of 111 to deny the visitors a wicket in the morning session. It was the first time Sri Lanka had crossed the 300-run mark in the two-match series led by India.
India took the second new ball in the morning but were unable to breakthrough as the left-right pair of Dinusha, unbeaten on 55, and Nuwantha (46) batted with patience and composure.
Dinusha, who made 103 in the first innings, has stood anchor with top support from number eight Nuwantha. Dinusha had also hit 100 and 84 in the first Test.
India, who posted 503-9 declared in their first innings, enforced the follow-on after they bowled out Sri Lanka out for 290. The hosts were in trouble at 218-6 in their second innings before Dinusha and Nuwantha got down to the grind.BSS
