How Bangladesh can still qualify for T20 WC semis
Australia’s shock loss to Afghanistan has opened the door for Bangladesh and the Tigers now have a slim chance of qualifying for the semi-finals of the ongoing Twenty20 World Cup despite losing their first two games of the Super Eight stage.
Bangladesh were pitted in Group 1 along with India, Australia and Afghanistan in the second round of the tournament.
The Tigers lost both their matches so far, going down to Australia by 28 runs (Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method) before suffering a 50-run defeat to India in Antigua Saturday.
In Saturday’s other clash, Afghanistan defeated Australia by 21 runs. The Aussies’ stunning defeat to the Afghans now opens up Group 1.
So at this point in the Group 1 standings, India are leading the chart with four points and will face Australia in the last game.
While both Australia and Afghanistan have two points with one win and one loss. And with zero points after two matches, Bangladesh need the favor of India to qualify, reports DT.
First, they need to win big against Afghanistan in their last Super Eight game. Simultaneously Australia have to lose by a big margin against India.
In that scenario, India will go through with six points and three wins. And all three other teams: Bangladesh, Australia and Afghanistan will end up with two points.
So then net run rate will be measured.
After two matches each in Group 1 at this moment, Australia are ahead among these three with a good margin of + 0.223. Afghanistan are in second spot with a NRR of -0.65 and Bangladesh are at the bottom with -2.489.
So only Australia’s defeat against India and Bangladesh’s win against Afghanistan will not guarantee Tigers a spot in the semi-finals. Rather, Bangladesh require Australia to lose by a huge margin and also, the Tigers need to defeat Afghanistan by a big difference.
According to ESPNcricinfo, the equation for Bangladesh to qualify for the semifinal is stated as: “Bangladesh will need to win by 31 runs for their NRR to sneak ahead of Afghanistan's, but they will also need Australia to lose against India by 55 runs, to finish second in the group and qualify for semi-final.”
Australia will face India at Gros Islet, Saint Lucia Monday at 10:30am local (West Indies) time and 8:30pm Bangladesh time.
