Mitchell Santner led New Zealand to a historic victory over India

Mitchell Santner led New Zealand to a historic victory over India, claiming a 113-run win in the second test on Saturday and securing the series 2-0. This marks India's first home test series loss since 2012, when they were defeated by England.

Santner showcased exceptional skill, taking 13 wickets in the match—7 for 53 in the first innings and 6 for 104 in the second—as India struggled to chase a target of 359. The hosts were bowled out for 245 runs in 60.2 overs.

“It’s tough to win a series here,” said Santner, named player of the match. “Every wicket felt better as I kept going.”

Yashasvi Jaiswal was India's standout performer, scoring 77 runs off 65 balls, while Ravindra Jadeja added 42. New Zealand’s Ajaz Patel and Glenn Phillips contributed with 2 for 43 and 1 for 60, respectively.

India has now lost only four home test series since 2000, with New Zealand previously winning just two tests in India—1969 and 1988. Captain Tom Latham praised his team’s effort, highlighting the importance of setting a challenging total and adapting to various conditions.

New Zealand set India a formidable target after being bowled out for 255 in their second innings, losing quick wickets after a steady start. Jadeja found form with three wickets, but it was Santner’s performance that ultimately sealed the match.

India slipped from a promising 127 for 2 to 147 for 5 in just 51 deliveries. Captain Rohit Sharma acknowledged his team's shortcomings, stating, “We didn’t capitalize on key moments. You need to score runs to win.”

The final test begins in Mumbai on Friday.
