A scintillating maiden century from Sherfane Rutherford powered the West Indies to a dramatic five-wicket victory over Bangladesh in the first ODI at Warner Park on Sunday. Rutherford's blazing 113 off 80 balls, featuring seven fours and eight sixes, was the backbone of West Indies' chase of Bangladesh's challenging 294/6.

The 26-year-old, playing his 10th ODI, arrived at the crease with the West Indies at 94/3 and steered his side to 295/5 in just 47.4 overs. Rutherford formed a crucial 99-run partnership for the fourth wicket with captain Shai Hope (86), before being dismissed in the 45th over. His departure left the West Indies needing 42 runs, which Rutherford had set up for Justin Greaves (41*) to see them home with a 95-run stand.

“I think he's really improved his batting,” Hope said of Rutherford. “We’ve always spoken about consistency, and he's showing it now. He strikes the ball really well, and the hard work is paying off.”

Earlier, Bangladesh posted a competitive total, led by opener Tanzid Hasan (60) and captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz (74). Middle-order contributions from Mahmudullah (50*) and Jaker Ali (48) lifted the score, but it was not enough to stave off Rutherford's onslaught.

The West Indies now lead the three-match series 1-0.
