Bangladesh to Import Five More LNG Cargoes in August

The government is set to import five more cargoes of liquefied natural gas (LNG) this month to meet the country’s growing energy demand. The five cargoes will contain around 16 million MMBtu of LNG.

The additional shipments have been secured under spot-market, long-term and short-term purchase arrangements, according to Petrobangla Director (Finance) A.K.M. Mizanur Rahman.

He said the additional LNG imports were arranged to help maintain stability in the country’s gas supply system.

Bangladesh imports LNG from three sources—long-term contracts, short-term contracts and the spot market—to meet its growing energy needs. Each LNG cargo contains an average of around 3.2 million MMBtu.

A total of nine LNG cargoes are scheduled to arrive in Bangladesh in August. Four cargoes have already arrived, while the remaining five are expected to reach the country later this month. Together, the nine cargoes will contain around 28.8 million MMBtu of LNG.

According to Petrobangla sources, Bangladesh has secured one cargo under long-term contracts, five under short-term contracts and three from the spot market for August. The remaining shipments are scheduled to arrive on August 17, 21, 23, 27 and 30.

In July, Bangladesh imported a total of 11 LNG cargoes, containing around 35.2 million MMBtu, through long-term and short-term contracts and the spot market.

According to RPGCL data, QatarEnergy of Qatar and OQ Trading, the energy and commodities trading arm of Oman’s OQ, supply LNG to Bangladesh under long-term agreements.

OQ Trading also supplies LNG to Bangladesh under short-term arrangements.

The government also regularly purchases LNG from the spot market, subject to approval from the Cabinet Committee on Government Purchase.
